This seven page white paper introduces ST’s Steval-Smartag1 NFC dynamic tag sensor node evaluation board, and explains how developers can use its combination of a dynamic NFC tag, energy harvesting capability and environmental sensors to track and protect products on their journey through the supply chain, in stores and in the home.
The paper starts with an overview of the product including its size and major components, before moving on to detail its low power usage features and its energy harvesting capability, meaning that it can even be used to produce batteryless sensor tags that are powered solely by the device that reads them via NFC.
A semi-passive mode can also wake the device to take sensor readings from time to time, while using negligible current in its quiescent state.
The paper then explains the software included with the package, including a comprehensive developer library and an example app that can be used to gather and display data from the tag on Android and iOS devices.
A summary of the technical features of the developer board follows, detailing the microcontroller, the dynamic NFC tag, the sensors — a linear accelerometer, an absolute pressure sensor that functions as a barometer, and a relative humidity and temperature sensor — and its other components, as well as how they interface to each other.
The final section deals with example use cases and applications, and outlines the main benefits of using the platform.
